Freaks and Geeks.

Yesterday we started watching Freaks and Geeks, a reality TV show placed in high school around the 1980's. It only aired for one season, but in the few minutes I saw, it looked like it would've been a hit. The show is about a few kids in high school, but the few kids are part of something much larger than they realize. I guess the show is somewhat similar to my life...Being that fact that it is in high school...other than that, there is the cliques and factions throughout school. In the show it sponsors the freaks and the geeks. Whereas a school as big as ours, doesn't leave as much room for groups like that, but they are evident and visible if you look hard enough. If I had to relate this show to a sociologist perspective, I'd pick Emile Durkheim, and her functional theory. There are different groups and leaders that serve different purposes, mainly the freaks and the geeks. Two very different types of people, the things they wear, the way they dress, the things they do in their free time, where they plan on going to school after highschool. Things like that really make a difference in what group their in. And these choices can really relate to the average high schooler, like me, because that happens everyday. Now in our large school, its tough to pin 2 small groups, more like a thousand cliques and groups like that. But the same message still applies.

Silence...

Why would anyone consider silence to be awkward? When your alone sometimes silence is good. others like to get rid of the silence by blasting music. But in a classroom or a lunch table, when someone is speaking and everyone else chimes in, but then....silence...Some people throw out the awkward turtle or something to break up that absense of sound, and we cheer it on with a giggle. Similar to what my teacher Mr. Sal did in class on the first day of school. He said ok class, lets begin talking about sociology. And then he proceeded to sit in the back of the class behind two girls, and just sat there. out of sight of a few students, while the rest stared at him. After a minute or so, one of the kids said. "Sooo, where should we start?" And then thats when Mr. Sal stood up and started teaching us about sociology, mainly about why we consider silence awkward. And its the fact that we have gone to school over the last few years, and when we enter the class, we assume the teacher has work for us to do. Not just to sit there and examine eachother. So i guess an appropriate message to assume, would be..to not assume. Everyday is different, and we should embrace each day not expecting the teacher to do what we think he might.

About me

Hey, my name is Chad Harris. I am 17 and a senior in high school this year. I was born on February 3rd, in Illinois. I have lived in the northern hemisphere my whole life. and probably will for the remainder of it. I do plan on visiting somewhere like Austrailia or New Zealand, I think it'd be fun to camp out over there. i recently started snowboarding the last couple years and so far haven't died trying it. I started taekwondo last year and plan to continue through college. speaking of college, I am fairly set on going to NIU, a lot of my buddies are going as well. It will be a great year, this one and the next. hopefully I can get some camping done with friends this year while its still dry, and once winter moves around go up north and start snowboarding again.
